Flight + Ground
Sometimes the best route is not flight-only.
More than a nearby airport
Flight + Ground is not just about swapping in a nearby airport. It compares a flight leg plus a ground transfer as one journey — because the cheapest flight on paper isn't always the best way to actually get where you're going.
Door-to-door is what matters
Airport-to-airport price and time are misleading on their own. Some airports are far from the city they serve, so a cheaper flight can become worse once you add the transfer. What counts is city-center-to-city-center — the real door-to-door journey.
Sometimes a nearby airport plus a train or bus is genuinely faster or cheaper.
When it helps
Illustrative examples — not guarantees, and always route-dependent:
- Bratislava (BTS) as an alternative for Vienna
- Bergamo (BGY) for Milan
- Charleroi (CRL) for Brussels
- Memmingen (FMM) for Munich
- Girona (GRO) for Barcelona
- Thessaloniki, Sofia, Pristina, or Tirana as alternatives around the Balkans
Why it needs its own search
This is a separate search mechanic because it has to combine several things a normal flight search doesn't:
- A flight leg and a ground leg together
- A realistic transfer buffer between them
- Border and visa risk if the transfer crosses a country
- A door-to-door time estimate, not airport-to-airport
- A baggage and self-transfer warning
Risks to check
- Visa and transit rules for any country you pass through
- Border crossings and the documents they need
- Baggage and self-transfer between separate tickets
- A generous minimum buffer between the flight and the ground leg
- Night arrivals, delays, and ferry or rail schedule changes
What CovaSky does
CovaSky can suggest mixed flight-and-ground travel patterns as route ideas. It does not sell tickets or show live prices — and normal flight search does not fully handle these combinations. You verify the final rules and availability with each airline, operator, and booking or search partner.
Mixed routes are self-transfer: no single operator is responsible for missed connections. Check final availability on Aviasales and verify visas, baggage, and buffer times. Read the full disclaimer.
